The First Revelation

The command to read opened the final revelation and a mission of worship, knowledge and mercy.

Muhammad ﷺ would withdraw from the noise and injustice of Makkah to worship and reflect in the Cave of Hira. During Ramadan, Angel Jibril عليه السلام came to him with the command, “Read.” The first verses of Surat al-ʿAlaq proclaimed Allah as Creator and Teacher.

He returned home deeply affected. Khadijah رضي الله عنها comforted him and testified to his care for relatives, the poor, guests and people in difficulty. She took him to Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who recognised the pattern of earlier revelation. The Prophetic mission began not with worldly power but with knowledge, trembling responsibility and the reassurance of a faithful home.

What We Learn

  • Sacred knowledge begins in Allah’s name.
  • Character gives strength when responsibility feels overwhelming.
