The honoured wives of the Prophet ﷺ are known as the Mothers of the Believers. The widely taught Sunni enumeration is eleven wives with whom marriage was established; nine survived him ﷺ. Dates below are approximate where historical reports differ.
Sawdah bint Zamʿah رضي الله عنها
An early Muslim who had migrated to Abyssinia. She was known for warmth, generosity and care within the Prophetic household.
ʿĀʾishah bint Abī Bakr رضي الله عنها
A leading scholar and prolific transmitter of hadith. Her knowledge preserved details of worship, family life, medicine and the private Sunnah.
Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar رضي الله عنها
Known for worship and learning. The written collection of the Qur’an prepared under Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه was entrusted to her care.
Zaynab bint Khuzaymah رضي الله عنها
Remembered as Umm al-Masākīn—the Mother of the Poor—because of her compassion and generosity. She passed away not long after the marriage.
Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها
Hind bint Abī Umayyah was wise, patient and learned. Her counsel at al-Ḥudaybiyyah is remembered as an example of insight and sound judgement.
Zaynab bint Jaḥsh رضي الله عنها
Known for worship, charitable work and giving from what she earned with her own hands. Her marriage is mentioned in Sūrat al-Aḥzāb.
Juwayriyyah bint al-Ḥārith رضي الله عنها
Her marriage became a means through which many captives from her people were freed. She was devoted to remembrance of Allah.
Umm Ḥabībah رضي الله عنها
Ramlah bint Abī Sufyān held firmly to Islam during migration to Abyssinia. The Negus facilitated her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ.
Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy رضي الله عنها
Of noble lineage, she was known for patience, intelligence and generosity. The Prophet ﷺ defended her honour and comforted her.
Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith رضي الله عنها
The last woman the Prophet ﷺ married. She was known for maintaining family ties and transmitting knowledge of his household worship.
